Many people are now using auction
services, such as eBay. And as any user knows, including photos can
go a long way towards making your auction more successful. Additionally,
you might just want to share some photos of your or your family with
friends and relatives. In any case, here are some instructions on how
to upload and view photos on the Internet.
Use an FTP client, (we recommend
CuteFTP version 1.4 or later). Each FTP
client (or program) varies in their layout and terminology. We are going
to try to keep this tutorial as basic as possible, so that it will work
with the greatest number of FTP programs.
| 1) Dial
in to ICON as you normally would. |
| 2) Open
your FTP program. |
|
3) Opening this program,
you will be in the "Site Manager". We are going to
want to "Add A Site", that is, set up the instructions
that let you access the server and upload your files. You will
only need to Add A Site once. After this, every time you need
to FTP to your site you will click on the link that you are
creating now.
- a) "Site Label"
is for your use. Fill it in so that you will know what to
select the next time you want to update your site. Call it
whatever you like, but we suggest naming it something simple,
such as 'my eBay photos'.
- b) "Host Address"
is "elvis.icontech.com" (without the quotes).
- c) For "username"
and "password", use the ones that we issued with
your account. They are the same ones that you use to log on
and to check your mail and can be found on the settings sheet
that came with your account.
- d) [optional] It
is recommended that you create a new directory on your hard
drive for the files that you will work on for your site. When
you are in Step #3, you can fill in the path to the new directory
under "Initial Local Directory". After that, every
time you connect you will automatically be dropped right into
that directory.
- e) Under "Initial
Remote Directory", leave it blank.
- f) Click the button
marked "OK".
|
| 4) You are
now back in the site manager, and there should be a link that
contains the words you typed for your site label. Highlight that
label, and press the button marked "Connect". |
| 5) You are
now connected to our server. One panel of the screen is the directory
of the hard drive on your computer, and the other is the directory
of the hard drive on our server. To tell which is which, examine
them both. The panel that shows your hard drive should have a
list of drives and folders similar to what you would see in Windows
Explorer. The 'server' panel' contains folders such as 'bin',
'mail' and 'usr' (NEVER touch these folders). To move around in
either, use the arrow or folder that should be at the top of the
file list to go up one directory level, and double click on a
directory to open it. |
| 6) If this
is your first time doing this (and we assume it is), the first
thing you must do is create a new directory on the server side
where your web files will reside. At the top of the screen, under
"Commands", select "Make New Dir" (you may
also be able to access this by right clicking your mouse), and
call that directory "public_html" (without the quotes). |
| 7) In the
'server' panel, double-click the new directory that you just created,
called public_html. This is where you will put all files related
to your website. |
| 8) In the
'hard drive' panel, move to the directory on your local hard drive
where you have stored the files that you wish to upload to your
site. Highlight the particular file you wish to upload with the
left mouse button, and while holding the button down, drag it
to the other side. This file is now uploading to the server. Do
this for each file that you wish to upload. |
|
9) You've now uploaded
your files. Now, lets look at the naming scheme, so you can
give out the address for people to see your files.
Let's make some assumptions
here: lets assume your username (the first part of your email
address) is 'betty314'. And lets also assume that you've uploaded
one picture, called 'lamp.jpg'.
|
|
10) The
address for that picture would be 'http://www.icontech.com/~betty314/lamp.jpg'
Let's break
it down:
http://www.icontech.com/~betty314/lamp.jpg
http://www.icontech.com
is the address
of our server that you uploaded to.
/~betty314
We need the
slash, because that's how the Internet separates different parts
of an address. The tilde (~) means that this is a user area
on the server (free with your account, as opposed to a business
account). And 'betty314' is your user name. Obviously, your
real user name is different, so you should substitute for 'betty314'.
/lamp.jpg
Again, we
need the slash to separate different parts of the address. And
we use 'lamp.jpg' because that is the file name of your photo.
When you upload, you'll use the real name of your real photo,
but hopefully you get the idea by now.
So now,
you can have your friends and family share your photos. And
for you eBay'ers, this should help your auctions take off.
Good luck.
|
Hints:
| The two
file formats that the web supports are jpegs (.jpg) and gifs (.gif).
You MUST make sure to have the correct extension on the end of
the file name. If you upload what is a gif and call it a jpg,
it will not display properly. For more information on this, consult
the manual of the device that you use for making these photos
(either your scanner or digital camera) |
| Make sure
that all of the links in your files are correct. We recommend
listing them as all lower care, as they are case sensitive. (Ex.:
"picture.gif", "picture.GIF" and "PICTURE.GIF"
are treated as three distinctly different files. Linking to one
when you meant the other will result in a broken link) |
| When uploading
or downloading files, instead of transferring one at a time, hold
down the control key and use the mouse to individually click on
each file to move. Still holding the control key, drag them over
to the other side of the screen. |
