The
following patches are from Microsoft and are to prevent the MSBlaster worm
from infecting your Windows-based PC. Windows 98 and older machines are not
susceptible to this worm, so if your operating system is not listed, you should
not have a problem. However we recommend that you check with Microsoft
for current updates.
How do I know if I have it?
1) If your
machine is constantly rebooting
2) If you get an error that says svchost.exe has generated errors and will
close
3) Even if you're not having these problems, you should STILL run these programs
to protect yourself
Instructions - print these for reference
If your
machine is constantly rebooting do this first, if not, skip to #1 below:
go to the Start menu, select Run and type:
cmd
You'll see a command window. In that window type:
shutdown /A
- this will prevent Windows from automatically shutting down and give you
time to run the patch and the fix.
Windows 2000
users need to type
shutdown /A /L
1) Save the appropriate patch AND the fix program to your hard drive.
Files:
some of these patches require you to have installed certain Microsoft
service pack updates from the Microsoft
site before installing the patch
Windows 2000 -
requires Service Pack 3 or 4
Windows XP
Windows NT4 - requires Service
Pack 6a
Windows NT4 Terminal Server
- requires Service Pack 6
WindowsServer 2003
- 32 bit
WindowsServer 2003
- 64 bit
Fix: FixBlast
2) First, run the operating system specific patch to prevent further infection.
3) After running the patch, you MUST reboot your machine before proceeding (the patch should prompt you to do so).
4) Next, run the fix program to cleanse your PC.
5) Reboot again. That's it. You should now be clean and inoculated against this worm.
